Harley Lee Strayer, 86, of DeGraff, died at 8:55 a.m. Sunday, July 28, 2013, at his home.
He was born in DeGraff on Oct. 7, 1926, a son of the late Ray Sherman and Tena Anna Sidle Strayer.
On April 8, 1951, he married the former Donna Mae Householder in DeGraff and she died Nov. 7, 2009. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Strayer; brothers, Donald, Sherman and Robert R. Strayer; and sisters, Lucile Miller and Catherine Kuhn.
Survivors include a son, Stephen (Rita) Strayer of Bellefontaine; two daughters, Janet (Kevin) Smith and Debbie (Jim) Carey, both of DeGraff; a brother, Richard N. Strayer and a sister, Louise Beatty, both of DeGraff; eight grandchildren, Matthew (Kaitlin) Strayer of Columbus, Michael (Rachelle) Strayer of Lancaster and Emilee, Christopher and Nicholas Smith, Alexander, Hailey and Benjamin Carey, all of DeGraff; two stepgrandchildren, Mindy (Carlos) Cioffi of Bellefontaine and Jeff (Brandie) Wren of DeGraff; six great-stepgrandchildren; three great-great-stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A 1944 graduate of DeGraff High School, he was a farmer and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked at Mid-States Container Corp. for many years and was a member of the DeGraff United Methodist Church, Miami Grange 2158, Miami Valley Post 652 and American Legion, all in DeGraff. He also enjoyed being with and doing things with his grandchildren, and plowed gardens for community members for many years.
The Rev. Kymberly James officiates a celebration service at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the DeGraff United Methodist Church. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, DeGraff. Burial is in Greenwood-Union Cemetery, DeGraff.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the DeGraff United Methodist Church.
