Shirley Lou Lucas Sargent, 77, of Grants Pass, Ore., died Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Fair View Transitional Health Center, of a cancerous brain tumor.
The ninth of 12 children, she was born in Somerville on June 21, 1935, a daughter of the late William and Catheryn Lucas. She also was preceded in death by two children, Kevin and Chris Sargent; a brother, Albert L. Lucas; and four sisters, Beulah McColloch, Donna Wilkins, Wilma Robson and Emma Stout.
On Dec. 20, 1954, she married Fred Sargent in Ontario, Calif., and he survives, along with a son, Fred Sargent Jr. of Corvallis; a daughter, Karen Sargent of Portland, Ore.; a brother, William E. Lucas of Florida; five sisters, Mary Dearwester and Kay Taylor, both of Bellefontaine, Joanne Liles of Belle Center, Florence Curtis of Toledo and Sharon Deardorff of Rushsylvania; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She earned a teaching degree and taught at the special education school in Murphy, Ore., and in North Pole, Alaska, until she retired in 1985.
In 1987, she and her husband moved back to Grants Pass, where they became active in the Rogue Eagles Radio Control Club and enjoyed traveling with the club.
She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and spent many hours researching history for her family tree.
She supported the local library and enjoyed reading, flower gardening and watching birds.
Pastor Steve Clogston conducts a memorial service at 11 a.m. April 6 at Chapel of the Valley-LB Hall Funeral Home. Private inurnment is in Eagle Point National Cemetery.
