Forrest Dale King

King-Forrest-obit

Forrest Dale King, 76, Harrisonburg, Va., passed away in his sleep Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, after a three-year battle with cancer.

He was born in Cass County, Mo., on Dec. 4, 1935, to the late Archie L. and Sadie Fern King King. His parents moved to West Liberty before he was a year old and he completed grade school and high school in West Liberty. He moved to Scottdale, Pa., directly out of high school.

Scottdale was his home for 21 years, although two years were spent in Europe in PAX service and two other years at Goshen College in Goshen, Ind. While living in Scottdale, he worked 15 years at the Mennonite Publishing House and three years at the Jeannette, Pa., newspaper.

He married Faye D. Bowman in 1961 and two daughters were born to them while in Scottdale.

In 1974, they moved to Goshen, Ind., where Dale earned his nursing degree and then worked seven years at Goshen General Hospital.

They moved to Harrisonburg, Va., in 1984. Dale worked nearly 30 years as a registered nurse.

He enjoyed spending time in many different mission-related services with Habitat for Humanity, Mennonite Disaster Service and Virginia Mennonite Missions.

One of his hobbies was woodworking and he enjoyed many hours of this in retirement, including significant time teaching his grandsons. Family and his church family were very important to him and he greatly enjoyed reunions and spending time with loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, Faye; two daughters, Kendra (Mark) Shickel of Mt. Crawford, Va., and Krista (David) Powell of Waynesboro, Va.; six grandchildren, Kathryn, Hannah, Emily and Maria Shickel, and Darek and Elijah Powell; one sister, Vera McCarty of Harrisonburg, Va.; two brothers, Merle King of Indianapolis and Willard King of West Liberty; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Ruby Paul, Valeta Headrick and Herbert; and two nieces.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Compassion Fund of Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, 1491 Virginia Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22802.

A memorial service begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, in Detwiler Auditorium at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. Another memorial service begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Mt. Vernon Mennonite Church, Grottoes, Va., with Al and Rose Huyard and Owen Burkholder officiating. The family will be happy to visit with friends at either service. Dale decided to donate his body to the Virginia Anatomical Program for research, therefore there will be no viewing.

The family thanks those who ministered to Dale during his illness, especially for the love and care of Sentara Hospice the last few months.
