Esther Thompson, 103, of Brentwood, N.H., mother of Eleanor Knight of Bellefontaine, passed away May 22, 2014.
She was born July 3, 1910, in Newburyport, Mass., to the late T. Walter and Isabel Sutherland Towne. She married N. Stanley Thompson in 1932, and they lived in Newburyport for most of the 66 years they were together before his death.
She was active in the Bellville Congregational Chapel where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Service Club. She was also a member of the Choral Society of Newburyport for many years. She was also involved as a Girl Scout leader, where she was known as “Sunshine.”
She spent her last seven years at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, N.H. She had a great wit and a smile for all.
Survivors include three children, R. David (Barbara) Thompson of Bucksport, Maine, Eleanor R. Knight of Bellefontaine and Mary A. Fowler-Walton of Epping, N.H.; 15 grandchildren, including Sharon Robinson of Quincy, Sheryl Dolan, Lee Roy Clem and Ellen Trout, all of Lakeview, Mary Clem of Bloom Center, and Theresa Webb of Louisiana; 32 great-grandchildren; and 29 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she also was preceded in death by five sisters, Anne Towne, Alice Towne, Eleanor Towne, Edna Jewett and Pauline Bishop; a son, Peter Thompson; and Joseph Clem, a great-grandson.
A memorial service celebrating her long life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the home of her daughter, Eleanor Knight, 405 E. Patterson Ave., Bellefontaine.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bellville Congregational Chapel, 300 High St., Newburyport MA 01950; and the Rockingham County Nursing Home Residents’ Fund, 117 North Road, Brentwood N.H. 03833.
