Mary Lu Herring Meyer, 98, of Bellefontaine, passed away Wednesday night, April 9, 2014, at Logan Acres Care Center.
She was born in Logan County on Dec. 1, 1915, to the late Joseph B. and Agnes Scott Ricks. Orphaned at the age of 8, she was raised by the late James and Elizabeth Cooke.
She married William G. Herring on Dec. 24, 1936, they divorced in 1958 and he preceded her in death. She later married Lawrence John Meyer on July 22, 1967, and he preceded her in death Jan. 22, 1997. She also was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Vernon Herring; sister, Frances E. Smith; and a grandson, Rodney Joe Herring.
Survivors include her sons, William Joseph “Joe” (Ruth) Herring of Bellefontaine, John “Ed” (Genny) Herring of McComb and Robert Stanley (Liz) Herring of Sidney; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
A 1934 graduate of Huntsville High School, Mary Lu was an active member of the Belle Center American Legion Auxiliary and the Bellefontaine VFW Auxiliary. A member of the Disabled American Veterans, Mary Lu enjoyed making lap robes for the Dayton VFW and veteran’s hospital. She retired as a secretary from Brown’s Pest Control.
Mary Lu was a member of the Belle Center United Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed camping and sewing, and her family meant the world to her.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to a funeral at 11 a.m. Monday at the Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine, with Minister Blake Kenner and Pastor Jim Burton officiating. Burial is in Huntsville Cemetery.
