Thomas D. Maynard of Sidney died at home Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the age of 68. Our time with him was cut short by his battle with cancer.
Some can say they once set out across the country to follow their dream. Few can add that they met the love of their life along the way. That’s how Tom Maynard, a native of Virginia Beach, made his way to Sidney more than 20 years ago. With that bold move, his zest for all that life could hold was evident. Devoted husband, loving father and step-father to six, proud grandfather of nine, and newly-minted great-grandfather, he knew the love of family.
He never got used to the cold and snowy Ohio winters, and developed an appreciation for plaid flannel shirts, sporting them nearly constantly while occasionally reminding us of his southern roots. We can still hear his, “okay, darlin’” with its ever-so-slight drawl.
Many knew him as a loyal friend and coworker, accepting and kind, quick to share a laugh. Upon retirement from Honda Transmission Manufacturing, his expanding brood of chickens knew him as an attentive farmer. He loved his rotating menagerie of steer and sheep over the years and enjoyed the chance to spoil his long-awaited Suffolk draft horse, Royal Sabre. When he wasn’t tending his animals or keeping up with friends, near and far, he could be found checking on the growth of his trees and plants, reading Civil War history, honing his solitaire skills, or indulging in chocolate chip cookies and strong coffee. Only the best and the darkest on both counts.
He taught us to laugh out loud, to love the beauty of nature, to enjoy the simple things, and not to take life for granted.
He is survived by his beloved wife Rita Meyer of Sidney and children and grandchildren: Adina Maynard Schwab of San Diego (husband Robert, children Jeanette and Nayan, and Jeanette’s son Jude), Jason Maynard of Virginia Beach (wife Darice, daughter Maleana), Chris Pohl of Columbus, Melissa Pohl of Mt. Vernon (husband Jonathan Fettig, son James), Craig Pohl of Troy (wife Michelle, children Mason, Finley and Sullivan), Melinda Pohl Niezgoda of Columbus (husband Chad, daughters Quinn and Tess) as well as 10 siblings, and many in-laws, friends and extended family.
