Melvin L. Long Sr., 72, of Mt. Victory, died at 12:53 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born in Rushsylvania on Oct. 29, 1941, to the late Charles F. and Martha A. Stevens Long. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Gaylord “Pete” Long; and a sister, Dorothy German.
On Sept. 9, 1961, he married Janice McCalla and she survives in Mt. Victory, along with children, Christina Long of Mt. Victory, Anthony (Kathy) Long of Marion and Melvin (Jane) Long Jr., Laurie (John) Wickersham and Charles Long, all of Mt. Victory, 10 grandchildren, Sarah, Seth, Dustin, Kellie, Natasha, Jason, Amanda, Tyler, Jacob and Austin; four great-grandchildren, Sophie, Laylah, Maddyxx and Autumn; several stepgrandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren; sisters, Judy Kerns and Donna Wiley, both of Ridgeway, and Polly (Bucky) Lord of Batesville, Ind.; a brother, Charles Long of Cato, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He retired from Ford Motor Company in Lima and was a Mt. Victory Fire department volunteer for 40 years.
He was a member of East Liberty Methodist Church.
Melvin loved to fishing, hunting, reading Westerns, bird-watching and watching Duck Dynasty.
Pastor Max Jackson officiates a service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Price Funeral Home, Mt. Victory, where visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial is in Hale Cemetery.
