Herbert R. Peters Sr., 88, of Belle Center, passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at his home.
Herb was born on Oct. 30, 1925, in Farmington, Wis., to the late Edward S. and Beatrice Peters. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elaine; a son, Richard L. Peters; two grandsons, Anthony Dean Peters and Jeremy Robert Robinson; a brother, Francis Peters; and a sister, Sister Alabama Peters.
On April 6, 1992, he married the former Eleanor “Ellie” Bodi Woods in Lakeview and she survives, along with nine children, Herbert (Brenda) Peters Jr. and Craig (Sheri) Wood, both of Florida; Charles (Mary Ellen) Wood Jr. of Illinois, Cynthia (Louis) Ashton of Arizona, Christopher Wood of Nevada and Diane Woods, Cheryl (Bill) Davis, Edward Peters and Clayton Wood, all of Ohio; 22 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Herb retired from GM in Columbus after 25 years. Prior to working at GM, he worked at Sealtest Dairy and drove an ice cream truck.
He was a member of UAW Local 969 in Columbus, and was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing bingo and working with wood and ceramics.
Herb was a humble and caring person, who selflessly volunteered at St. Anthony Hospital in Columbus and with REACT where he assisted in many disaster relief efforts. His efforts earned him honors and praise from the president of GM for his dedication to helping others.
Visitation is two hours prior to a funeral at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview. Burial is in Huntsville Cemetery.
