Roy H. Byler, 95, of West Liberty, passed away at 8:20 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at his residence.
He was born in Champaign County on Feb. 9, 1918, to the late Oliver Raymond and Rose Amanda Stoltzfus Byler. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Classen, and two brothers, Floyd and Frank Byler.
On Oct. 19, 1947, he married the former Ruby C. Fisher in West Liberty, and she survives, along with his children, Richard (Penny) Byler of Greenville, Miss., Daniel Byler of Bangkok, Thailand, Rose (Don) Rosanova of Brookfield, Wis., Deborah Byler of Elkhart, Ind., and David Byler of Sandstone, Minn.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Yoder of Goshen, Ind.; four brothers, Arthur Byler of Willowstreet, Pa., Robert (Lora) Byler of Hagerstown, Md., Elmore (Cheryl) Byler of Hiawassee, Ga., and Ellsworth (Evelyn) Byler of White Pigeon, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A retired dairy farmer and construction worker, Roy was a lifelong member of the Bethel Mennonite Church where he served several years as a chorister and Sunday School teacher.
Roy was very focused on foreign missions. He and his wife, Ruby enjoyed traveling, having visited all 50 states, Europe, South America and Israel. They also spent 11 years assisting in voluntary services in Brownsville, Texas.
During World War II, he served with the Civilian Public Service.
Pastor Dave Maurer will conduct a memorial service at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bethel Mennonite Church, 416 Washington St., West Liberty. Calling is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 101 Zanesfield Road, West Liberty. A private committal service in Highland Memorial Cemetery, West Liberty, is at the convenience of the family.
