Robert C. Walker, 89, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Lost Creek Care Center, Lima.

He was born in Findlay on July 2, 1923, a son of the late Harry and Minnie Ferguson Walker. He also was preceded in death by a son, Denny Walker; and his sister, Alice Smith.

On Aug. 23, 1947, he married the former Lena Madonia, who survives, along with a son, Larry (Cheryl Lehman) Walker of Bellefontaine.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served with the 29th Infantry Division from 1943 to 1946, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and served continuously until the capture of St. Lo on July 18, 1944. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition during the liberation of France, Certificate of Enrollment at World War II Memorial, Presidential Unit Citation, four Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead.

He retired from Lima State Hospital as a corrections officer and had worked at Buckeye Rubber. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and playing cards. He also made fishing lures.

He was a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church ,where he served as an usher. He enjoyed cooking at the church functions.

Robert was a board member at Gethsemani Cemetery, life member of VFW Post 1275 and the American Legion Post 96.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremations Services, Shawnee Chapel, 1170 Shawnee Road, Lima. Father David Ross officiates a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Catholic Church. Burial is in Gethsemani Cemetery, with military rites by VFW 1275.
