Thomas Carlton Lease, 96, of rural Middleburg, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana. He was born Aug. 26, 1916, in North Lewisburg and was a graduate of North Lewisburg High School.
He married Thelma Grace Meeks on May 1, 1937, and they were married for 66 years. He retired from SPECO as a supervisor for more than 42 years. He was a member of the Middleburg United Methodist Church, the United States Humane Society, the National Audubon Society and the History Channel Club. He enjoyed nature and whether he was farming, observing the weather, watching wildlife, fishing, hunting, camping or traveling the USA and Canada, he was a true outdoorsman. He enjoyed reading, was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan and enjoyed attending class reunions at Triad High School.
Survivors include his sons, Thomas (Wallene) Lease of Ethelsville, Ala., and Joseph (Nancy) Lease of Bellefontaine; daughters, Elaine (Richard) Willis of Rochester, Minn., Anita (Jerry) Williams of East Liberty and Kathy (Philip) Hess of West Liberty; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 43 nieces and nephews; and special friends and neighbors, Ron Beidelman and Joe and Angie Holloway.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David William and Cornelia Frantz Lease; his wife, Thelma Grace Meeks Lease; his brothers, Dane (Eunice) Lease and Roy (Ruth) Lease; his sisters, Connie (Chester) Haley and Mary (Herman) Thomas; two great-grandsons; three nephews; and one niece.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Monday in the Middleburg United Methodist Church with Pastors Tim Reeves and Mebane McMahon officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral, starting at 11 a.m. Burial follows in Middleburg Cemetery.
