TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Ohio parks officials are ready to unveil how they plan to develop a former winery on Lake Erie's Middle Bass Island.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources on Thursday also will reveal upcoming improvements at state parks and campgrounds on the Lake Erie islands.
A key piece of the new plans centers on the former Lonz Winery site that the state acquired just over 14 years ago. The winery was shut down in 2000 after a terrace collapse there killed one person and injured 75 others.
Its main building towers over Middle Bass Island's southern shore and was once the island's main attraction.
The state has talked for years about what to do with the site, but suggestions for a conference center, restaurant or museum haven't moved forward.
