SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Police say they are still hunting the person who fatally shot a standout high school athlete during a parking lot dispute over the weekend in western Ohio.
Springfield Police Chief Stephen Moody said the killing of 17-year-old Jeff Wellington early Sunday was a "cowardly act." He's asking for the public's help in capturing the shooter.
The Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/1lutmnC ) reports that Wellington was shot when he tried to resolve a dispute in the parking lot of an apartment complex at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday.
Wellington was a junior and a standout running back for the Springfield High School Wildcats football team. Schools superintendent David Estrop says 25 to 30 crisis counselors will be made available for students, staff and parents when classes resume Monday.
