Ohio man gets 8 years in toddler's death

ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio man whose girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter died from injuries suffered while he was baby-sitting has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Twenty-seven-year-old Luis Lopez had pleaded guilty last week to involuntary manslaughter, endangering children and domestic violence.

As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors in Elyria, west of Cleveland, had dropped murder and felonious assault charges. The (Lorain) Morning Journal (http://bit.ly/1lS4a6E ) reports Lopez was sentenced Wednesday.

Prosecutors agreed to the reduced charges after an investigation showed Aaviana Payne likely died after Lopez accidentally dropped her on the stairs and she hit her head. They said Lopez didn't seek medical attention for the girl, which led to her death.
