YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — A report says that more than one-third of 2012 high school graduates entering Ohio colleges for the first time required developmental classes in English or math to get up to speed.
Youngstown State University President Randy J. Dunn tells The Vindicator (http://bit.ly/1f0SxVD ) newspaper that the state's colleges and universities have to work with the education systems for kindergarten through 12th grade to make improvements.
The Board of Regents report showed that 40 percent of 2012 high school graduates took developmental courses in either of the two core courses at a public university or community college.
Dunn said more students are going to college now than in years past, so it stands to reason that the number in need of developmental coursework would be higher.
