AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Officials with the All-American Soap Box Derby say an educational racing competition will expand this year to other cities beyond the derby's hometown in northeast Ohio.
The Gravity Racing Challenge is a partnership with schools. It encourages education in subjects such as science and engineering as teams of students create and race derby cars.
The Akron Beacon Journal (http://bit.ly/1k9p68G ) reports the event drew 90 teams from around the country last year.
It's scheduled at Akron's Derby Downs on May 17 this year. Events for the challenge also will occur in Cleveland and Columbus, as well as Rochester, N.Y., and Culpeper, Va. The derby also will have Gravity Racing Challenge summer camps in Akron and Culpeper.
Corporate and other donations help fund schools' participation in the challenge.
