MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say at least three cats have died after a fire in the basement of an animal shelter in north-central Ohio.
Fire officials say they saved 36 cats from the Stop The Overpopulation of Pets cat rescue in Mansfield and that eight others are missing.
Mansfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Mark Sieving tells the Mansfield News Journal that he believes the dead cats died of smoke inhalation.
Dispatcher Mark Huckleberry says a shelter employee called authorities just before 6:30 p.m. Friday to report the fire in the basement. The cause of the fires is under investigation.
