Ex-Ohio doctor appeals prison term for mom's death

DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) — An ex-Ohio doctor convicted of raping an expectant mother and causing her death through a fatal heroin overdose has appealed his 36-year prison sentence.

A judge had ordered that Ali Salim serve his multiple sentences one after the other, with the judge calling the crime the worst he had ever seen.

Salim's attorney filed the appeal in Delaware County court Tuesday without explaining the reason for the appeal.

Delaware County judge Duncan Whitney sentenced Salim last month, fined him $70,000 and labeled him a sex offender.

Salim pleaded guilty last year to involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of Deanna Ballman and her nearly full-term child.

Authorities say the 23-year-old Ballman answered Salim's online ad soliciting sex after turning to prostitution to support herself and her two young children.
