COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A legislative committee that studies prison conditions in Ohio says assaults were down last year in the state's youth prison system.
The report by the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee finds 1,106 substantiated assaults in 2012. That's a 31 percent decrease from the previous year.
The CIIC report released Tuesday also finds the rate of assaults per youth across the Department of Youth Services declined over the same time.
The report cites 514 fights in 2012, a 31 percent decrease from a year earlier, with the rate of fights per youth also declining.
Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility in Massillon in northeast Ohio had the highest number of youth-on-youth assaults. Scioto Juvenile Correctional Facility in Delaware in central Ohio had the highest number of youth-on-staff assaults.
