Man charged in attack on pastor after service

NORTH HAMPTON, Ohio (AP) — Police have arrested a man who they say attacked a pastor after his sermon in a western Ohio church.

Police in North Hampton, near Springfield, say the Rev. Norman Hayes suffered a broken nose, bruises and three long cuts on his face in the Sunday attack.

The Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/19YogUx ) reports that the 57-year-old Hayes was beaten at Bridge Community Church by a self-described atheist after the pastor asked the man's girlfriend if she felt safe.

Hayes said the man — 28-year-old James Maxie — was confrontational during the service. Then he became angry when the pastor suggested he might hurt his girlfriend.

Maxie, of Springfield, was charged with felonious assault and misdemeanor resisting arrest. He is in the county jail, which did not list an attorney for him.
