Ohio won't ask if drivers want off organ list

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohioans renewing their driver's licenses or state ID cards will no longer be asked if they want to remain on the list of willing organ donors.

The Columbus Dispatch ( ) reports that an amendment to the state budget signed by Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) instructs Bureau of Motor Vehicles workers not to bring it up to those already registered. Republican Rep. Cheryl Grossman of Grove City says the amendment is meant to help increase organ donation registry and to cut time at the BMV counter.

Ohio joins nine other states that don't ask registered donors about continuing. Donors can still remove themselves by requesting a status change at the BMV or online.

As of Aug. 30, 5.24 million Ohioans were registered organ donors, up from 5.19 million last year.
