DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) — A telecommunications company in central Ohio is under investigation over allegations that it broke federal rules by intercepting 911 calls instead of smoothly transferring them to law enforcement dispatchers.
Police in Delaware, north of Columbus, say workers for ICS Telecomm of Ohio answered emergency calls, took callers' information and then called in the concerns themselves instead of immediately transferring the calls as required under federal regulations. Police say the issue came to light recently and raises safety concerns about the possibility of misinformation being provided.
A team from several central Ohio police departments is investigating the company based in Lewis Center.
The Columbus Dispatch reports a sales consultant who answered the phone at ICS said the company is working with authorities to correct any problems.
