Implosion brings down 12-story building in Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Fifty pounds of dynamite was all that was needed to bring down a century-old, 12-story building in downtown Dayton.

The implosion took just seconds on Saturday morning as the building that once housed apartments fell onto itself.

The blast from the Schwind building echoed through downtown Dayton.

A demolition company official tells The Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/14nHpNX ) that everything went well and that the amount of debris in the street was less than expected.

The demolition is to make room for a major residential development that will house hundreds of students. A historic portion of the former Dayton Daily News newspaper building that's next door will be preserved.

The Schwind building dates to 1913.
