Child's body found in Ohio; mother arrested in Ky.

Child's body found in Ohio; mother arrested in Ky. HILLSBORO, Ohio (AP) — A search team found the body of a 1-year-old boy in a densely wooded area in southwest Ohio after an hours-long hunt, and the child's mother and her boyfriend were arrested in Kentucky, police said. The boy was identified by family members as Garin Niehaus, whose whereabouts had been a mystery to his father and several other relatives since December, the Hillsboro Times-Gazette reported ( ). His body was discovered Friday. Hillsboro police Chief Nick Thompson said in a news release that the department received a call Thursday reporting a suspicious death of a 1-year-old child and expressing concerns about the welfare of two other children in the same home in Richmond, Ky., which is about 130 miles south of Hillsboro. The Richmond Police Department sent officers to the home, where the two children were found, Thompson said. The mother, who was found at her workplace, and her boyfriend, who was believed to have fled the home but later was located, were arrested and charged with being a fugitive from another state, police said. The two children were taken into custody by child welfare officials. Through interviews, authorities were led to a rural spot near Hillsboro, about 60 miles east of Cincinnati, where the 1-year-old's remains were found late Friday afternoon, Thompson said. An autopsy will be performed to determine his cause of death. The mother and her boyfriend were being held in the Madison County, Ky., jail and awaiting extradition to Ohio. Both were facing charges of abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence, police said. While the search for Garin was underway, his father, Ian Niehaus, arrived at the scene, the newspaper reported. He said he had not seen his son for about six months despite efforts to do so. He also said he had been trying to alert authorities to concerns he had about Garin's mother and the welfare of his children.
