Teacher fired while pregnant testifies in Ohio

CINCINNATI (AP) — A teacher fired from Catholic schools after becoming pregnant through artificial insemination has told jurors in Ohio she didn't know the procedure violated church doctrine or that she could be fired for it.

Christa Dias (DEYE'-us) testified Wednesday in her federal lawsuit against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati and two schools. She wiped tears from her eyes as she described her shock at being fired in 2010.

The archdiocese's attorney says Dias was fired for violating a contract that required her to abide by Catholic doctrine.

Dias is a Christian but not Catholic and said she was told that didn't matter when she was hired. She says a contract clause requiring compliance with church philosophies meant she should try "to be a Christian woman and follow the Bible."
