COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A judge has sentenced a mentally ill man to five years of probation for causing a traffic crash that killed a central Ohio school teacher two years ago.
Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Michael Holbrook sentenced 36-year-old Eric Bowles on Monday.
Bowles had claimed he was not guilty by reason of insanity in the March 2011 crash. But Holbrook rejected that and found him guilty of aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of 61-year-old Molly Davis.
The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/YsEDI8) reports that Bowles admitted he drove through a red light and into Davis' car but said he didn't understand that his actions were wrong because of a mental illness.
Davis, who was set to retire after 40 years of teaching, was a former Ohio teacher of the year at an elementary school in the Columbus suburb of Bexley.
