MARYSVILLE — The preliminary report from a forensic investigations team shows criminals used the Internet to steal thousands of credit card numbers from patrons of Benny’s Pizza, 968 Columbus Ave., Marysville.
The business was compromised remotely, according to general manager Victoria Petrella.
At the beginning of the year, local police began receiving reports of credit cards being used for unauthorized purchases. Investigators connected all the cards to Benny’s.
Company officials hired a special team of computer investigators to see if the issue was tied to the restaurant and if it was, was it the intentional act of a local employee or had their computer system been compromised.
The manager said someone accessed the computer in the restaurant’s pub and patio using an application connected to the Internet, then installed malicious software to feed credit card numbers to the hackers.
