West Liberty firefighters benefit from farmer’s donation

donation

David Turner of rural Bellefontaine selected the West Liberty Fire Department to receive a $2,500 donation from the America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanta Fund.

Since 2010, the America’s Farmers campaign and programs have advocated on behalf of farmers and their efforts to meet society’s needs through agriculture and have donated more than $16.5 million to some 7,300 community organizations across rural America.

The donation will be used by the West Liberty Fire Department to purchase a set of turnout gear which costs around $2,500.

“We try to replace some every year,” said Conrad Hostetler, fire chief, about the bunker pants, coat, boots and helmet that comprise the set. “It is important for the 23 men that protect six different townships to be safe.”

The Monsants program offers farmers the chance to direct a $2,500 donation to their favorite community nonprofit organization. One winner is selected in each of the 1,324 counties in 40 states.

IL SADD poster winners announced

SADD-Poster-Winners

Fourth-grade students at Indian Lake Elementary created posters inspired by high school SADD Chapter presentations throughout February encouraging students to develop healthy behaviors.  SADD members selected the winners, including Aliyah Biggs, Tia Tracey, Tori Hurley, Sage Futrell and Heidi Hoffman. The posters highlight the serious issues the SADD members talked about, including internet and cell phone safety, avoiding prescription drugs, stranger danger, bicycle safety and even limiting video game play. SADD advisor Deb Metzger says she hopes that these older students can serve as role models and influence the elementary children to make positive choices.
