Smarties sound off

BES Reading Olympics

Bellefontaine Elementary School second-graders from Team “Smarties,” from the left, Sophia Mills, Conner Horvath and Jayden White react after buzzing in a correct answer Monday during the annual Second-Grade Reading Olympics competition at the Bellefontaine High School’s Distance Learning Center. The Smarties advanced to the final round of competition, and “The Fifth-Reader” team of Caleb Shreve, Alexis Hone and Haley Hughes won the competition after correctly answering the most questions about 14 different chapter books on a reading list, including Aliens For Breakfast, Charlotte’s Web, Little House on the Prairie, Flat Stanley and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. To qualify for the annual competition, second-graders had to read at least seven chapter books and write summaries about each one, gifted intervention teachers said. (EXAMINER PHOTO | MANDY LOEHR)
