BMS student advances to state MathCounts competition

Bellefontaine Middle School student Evan Kauffman received first place in the individual awards for the regional 34th annual MathCounts competition in Lima Saturday, and he will advance to the state competition March 11 in Columbus.  He received first place at the 34th annual regional event through his performance in the sprint and target rounds.  Fellow BMS students Cheyanne Klingerman, Levon Howard, Dawson Roberts, Dylan Stripe, Maggie Howard, Harsh Bakshi also participated in the regional competition. Their coach is Bellefontaine High School teacher Richard Kurtz. MathCounts is a national competition for grades 5-8 students, with an emphasis in solving math problems. A total of 10 teams competed at the regional event. A school competes by entering a team of students, and individuals may also participate without being on a School team. The competitions consist of sprint, target, team and countdown rounds. The Lima Society of Profession Enineers will underwrote expenses for the regional competition, as well as travel expenses to the state competition. Faculty members from both The Ohio State University at Lima and Ohio Northern University assisted in grading the exams.
