Fighting senior hunger

Volunteers working Tuesday at the Logan County Fairground distributed food to local seniors following a regional food drive coordinated by Comfort Keepers of Springfield. The organization, with the help of 38 businesses and agencies, collected about 5,000 pounds of food for needy seniors in Clark, Champaign and Logan counties during May through Comfort Keepers’ STOP Senior Hunger program. Local food collection points included Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken, Liberty National Bank and the Logan County Area Chamber of Commerce. The food drive was conducted during Older American’s Month, and Comfort Keepers notes that at least one in nine seniors is at-risk of going hungry because of the inability to obtain sufficient food for their household or having to choose between food and medical care.
