MILWAUKEE (AP) — The nation's governors have a warning for President Barack Obama and Congress: A fiscal standoff in Washington this fall could be catastrophic. States already are feeling the fallout of sweeping cuts in federal spending, and they're bracing for the fallout of lawmakers' recent failure to approve money for transportation.
That was the message as two dozen governors gathered in Milwaukee for their annual three-day summer conference. Their meeting opens on the same day Congress is leaving Washington for a five-week break with key work unfinished.
The fast-approaching fiscal showdown hung over the meeting on the shores of Lake Michigan in swing-voting Wisconsin.
