Measures lay foundation for road, airport projects
Examiner Staff Writer 05/14/08 Two measures laying the foundation for projects on south Main Street and at the Bellefontaine Regional Airport were given readings at Tuesday’s Bellefontaine City Council meeting. City administrators were given the go-ahead to hire a company to plan for utility relocation along south Main from Lake Avenue to the south city limits. The work is necessary to prepare for a $7 million widening project of Main that will expand the thoroughfare from three lanes to five. Most of the money will come from the Ohio Department of Transportation. It does not appear the agency will start the project until late 2009 or early 2010. Each year the city has the chance to access $150,000 in Federal Aviation Administration funding for projects at the airport. Current plans stipulate that two years of funding will be used to install water and sewer utility loops to 12 potential corporate hangar sites and add to the parking lot. But the city needs to have a consultant to make sure the plans will meet FAA standards, so the council measure will let the city seek and hire the right firm. Much of the FAA’s airport funding comes through user fees on fuel and air line tickets. The council’s next meeting is at 7:30 p.m. May 27.
