Neither the pilot of a Cessna Cardinal nor his wife were injured Sunday when their plane left the Bellefontaine Regional Airport runway and crashed into a fence.

Frank Slemmons, 63, of Zanesfield, was piloting the aircraft and attempted to land around 6:55 p.m. The four-seat plane traveled nearly 250 feet off the runway and into the fence.

His wife, Oria, was the sole passenger, according to troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Airport manager Steve Buchenroth said this has been the third crash since the airport opened in 2001 and all have been minor incidents under similar circumstances, either at takeoff or while landing.

While it may seem the plane traveled far off the runway, Mr. Buchenroth said covering 250 feet for a plane traveling at 80 mph is easy and happens quickly.

He said he feels bad for Mr. Slemmons who keeps his plane at the field.

The airport was closed for about 3 1/2 hours to notify federal and state aviation authorities, Mr. Buchenroth said.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration will be on scene today to review the crash.
