Teacher disciplined by city school board

The Bellefontaine Schools Board of Education issued an official reprimand at its Monday evening meeting to high school Spanish and English teacher JoAnne Aburto.

According to Superintendent Dr. Larry Anderson, Ms. Aburto violated board policy by taking students on a field trip during the school day that was not approved by the board.

“This is the case of a good teacher who made an unfortunate decision,” Dr. Anderson said.

The board discussed discipline measures in a 10-minute executive session, after which members unanimously approved a resolution agreement requiring Ms. Aburto to complete three unpaid work days during the current school year. Another part of the agreement included extending Ms. Aburto, a fouryear district employee, a two-year contract instead of the continuing contract for which she was qualified.

“After two years, she will again be up for a continuing contract,” Dr. Anderson said.

Bill Badenhop, executive director of administrative services, provided an update of the school buildings and grounds. He said that repairs on the maintenance building were under way and construction of a new roof for the administrative building was also being completed.

Also, during the upcoming months the high school parking lot will need to be coated and resealed and the high school track will receive a spray coating of a polymer concentrate, which will extend its life for another five to seven years, Mr. Badenhop said.

He also noted that the district will need to purchase an extra modular building for Western Intermediate School for the 2009-10 school year because an upcoming class has 270 students.

The board approved a remitter agreement with ING National Trust and ING Financial Advisors LLC for the district’s tax-deferred annuity program. The plan will allow the district to send a payment to ING, which will then make payments on behalf of the district to 15 or 16 various entities, Treasurer Keith Krieger said.

In other action, the board:

• extended five-year contracts to teachers Jill Carey, Jill K. Cronkleton, Marilyn Esh, Janet Fulton, Rita Hall, Brian LeCrone, Christopher Schmidt, Desnee Wolters and Karen Young;

• extended three-year contracts to teachers Lisa Asman Plank and Nellie Schmidt; • extended a two-year teaching contract to Mindy Zirkle;

• extended one-year contracts to teachers Jason Calton, Amanda Fulkerson, Katherine Gildow, Sheryl Lewis and James Roby;

• approved Tina L. Ravenscraft as a bus aide at $10.54 per hour effective April 21; and

• approved Purmont Brothers Insurance Agency as the agent for school accident and football insurance offered to students during the 2008-09 school year.

The next meeting is 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 19, at the board office, 820 Ludlow Road.
