When doors open — WE succeed is the theme for RTC Industries’ business partnership program and the anthem for an appreciation breakfast Thursday morning recognizing four individuals for their personal successes and numerous local businesses who opened their doors to them and other RTC clients.

Inspirational stories were plentiful as employers and RTC representatives sang the praises of the model employees who they said set the standard by which all workers could be measured.

Beaming with pride, Paul Patterson, Frank Chatfield, Deirdre Romine and Merrill “Junior” Baker Jr. accepted accolades for their determination and dedication to becoming independent.

Junior Baker was lauded for his accomplishments over the past 30+ years, including becoming the first and only known RTC associate to successfully complete the jury selection process and take active part in a two-day trial.

He has written letters to President George W. Bush and former Ohio Gov. Bob Taft and in return, received autographed pictures of both. He also earned certification to referee and umpire sporting events and has done so for local Special Olympic activities, in addition to winning numerous medals, ribbons and awards as a participant.

Mr. Chatfield started his career in 1983 at the Belle Center IGA where he quickly proved himself to be a reliable and responsible worker, according to RTC employment specialist Dale Barns.

“Like any hard working man, it’s hard to keep him down. Due to the seasonal nature of (his) Camp Willson job, Frank decided to work part time with AVI food systems at the Marysville Auto Plant. Of course, his manager wants him to work whenever he is available.”

Mr. Barns added, “Frank’s positive attitude and good work ethic make him a pleasure to know.”

RTC habilitation coordinator Nancy Evans-Donley introduced Paul Patterson who has been associated with the Logan County Board of MRDD since childhood. He does a number of jobs at RTC and takes part in Special Olympics bowling and softball programs.

Mr. Patterson also was instrumental in the passing of an MRDD levy in 1992, Ms. Evans-Donley said, as an integral part of the campaign efforts.

Deidre Romine has achieved a lot in a short period of time, according to RTC’s Kristin Oldiges, developing valuable industrial skills and moving towards living independently.

Last year, 30 local companies employed people with developmental disabilities and 25 provided sub-contract work to RTC Industries.
