A total of 30 teams with a variety of personalities — from Elvis impersonators to straw-hatwearing “corn pickers” — competed in 10 rounds of questions at the Logan County Branch of the American Association of University Women’s Trivia Bee fundraiser Wednesday night at the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center.

It was a group of more common citizens — Aaron Lauck, Richard Kurtz, Bill Badenhop, Mark Barlow and Mike Vetorino from Bellefontaine High School — that placed first with the greatest number of correct answers: 75 out of 100. The team finished fourth at the event last year.

“Our goal was to go home with the hardware this year,” Mr. Badenhop said of the silver medallions that the BHS team members were presented with at the conclusion of the program.

Runners-up for the title were five representatives from the Logan County Common Pleas Court. The Logan County District Library team and “The Hurley Farm Corn Pickers” tied for third place, and the Alvin Galvez Insurance group placed fourth.

Participants were tested on a variety of subjects, such as canines, gemstones, Logan County history, TV land and song titles.

The teams submitted their 10 answers for each round on slips of paper to judges Rob Patrick, Mindy Miracle, JoEtta Spain and Beth Harman, who calculated the winners of the nearly two and a half-hour trivia session.

Logan County AAUW President Jamie Ross said the bee was a success.

“We grew in the number of teams this year, as we had 25 last year,” she said. “Our goal was for everyone to have fun and I think we accomplished that.”

Mrs. Ross said the event raised approximately $3,000. The first $250 sends a Logan County girl to Camp GEMS — a program designed to encourage middle school girls to consider a career in engineering, math or science. The remainder of the money is divided between the AAUW Educational Foundation and the Logan County Education Foundation.
