City native receives teaching accolades

Horn Kayce

Kayce Horn, a 2002 Bellefontaine High School graduate, is the recipient of several recent honors for her work as a second-grade teacher at Whitehall Preparatory and Fitness Academy in Columbus.

She was named Performance Academies Company’s Elementary Teacher of The Year for the 2016-17 school year, selected as the recipient out of 14 schools.

A daughter of Sandy Horn of Bellefontaine and the late Don Horn, the educator also recently was selected for the Extra Yard for Teachers Award given by The Second and Seven Foundation, The Ohio State University, and the College Football Playoff Foundation. The honor is presented annually to one teacher in the Columbus area who goes the “extra mile” for students.

“The Second and Seven Foundation surprised me at school and came in with balloons delivered by Ryan Miller, former OSU football player and one of the founders of the Second and Seven Foundation,” Horn said in an e-mail.

As an Extra Yard for Teachers award recipient, she received a donor’s choice gift card to purchase technology for her classroom, along with a basket of OSU and Second and Seven Foundation items, and four tickets to the OSU football game Sept. 23 against the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

During the football game at Ohio Stadium, Horn was recognized on the field alongside her family.

The area native received her bachelor of arts license in early childhood education at Urbana University, and is currently attending Ashland University to pursue her master’s degree, which she expects to complete in May.
