Back-to-school bus safety

IL Schools bus training

Indian Lake Schools Transportation Director Pat Smith talks with bus drivers during their annual training before embarking on their routes next week, with the first day of school for the district, Wednesday, Aug. 23. They practiced scenarios on the bus with Smith and heard from Washington Township Officer Adam Niederkohr concerning emergency response techniques. Officer Niederkohr urged them to mentally prepare for the job of transporting dozens of students on each bus by thinking of themselves as “sheep dogs” or protectors of their flock. Bus drivers will also take part Friday in ALICE training with the entire Indian Lake Schools staff. Motorists are reminded that buses from other schools and Indian Lake summer school are already on the roads. “We appreciate your patience and understanding to keep kids safe as they travel to and from school, sporting events and other special activities,” school officials said.
