High-flying, high-voltage work

Helicopter power line

A helicopter from Haverfield Aviation of Gettysburg, Pa., performs highvoltage transmission line maintenance Monday afternoon in the 1400 block of west State Route 274 to replace spacers that hold subconductor wires apart. The aviation company, contracted through American Electric Power, has flown a pair of helicopters in the Logan County area during the past week to perform this work, also including the areas of state routes 292, 47, 638 and U.S. Route 68, Haverfield Aviation Superintendent Kevin Howell said today. The helicopters are equipped with one pilot and one lineman each, (see inset) and by the time the company reaches Indiana, they will have replaced 19,000 spacers in the region, Howell said.
