CO resigns after punching inmate

SHELBY COUNTY — Sheriff John Lenhart reportedly relieved Corrections Officer Teresa McElfresh, 59, of Sidney, of her duties Friday after she allegedly punched an inmate in the face Aug. 30.

Reportedly, Elizabeth Young, 19, of Sidney, incarcerated on an arson charge and scheduled to be released Jan. 17, spit on correctional staff employees after which McElfresh, who was not among those spat upon, punched the female inmate twice on the side of her face with her fist while the inmate was restrained in a chair.

The inmate was evaluated by medical staff and found not to have been injured.

An internal affairs investigation was then conducted. A misdemeanor assault charge is being considered but has not yet been filed.

McElfresh reportedly has had multiple disciplinary actions taken against her over the course of her employment with the sheriff's office. In a similar incident on March 19, 2000, she reportedly punched an inmate who tried to spit on a corrections officer. McElfresh was given a written reprimand at the time.
