High among Dan Bratka’s prayer requests Friday was that he could hold back tears when he took the oath of office Saturday as the interim Logan County Family Court judge.

But with his wife holding the Bible, his mentor Judge C. Douglas Chamberlain administering the oath and his three children, their families and his sisters filling the seats of the courtroom, his normally stoic facade became — for a brief moment — verklempt.
He learned mid-day Friday that Gov. John Kasich had appointed him to fill the vacancy left by Judge Chamberlain’s July 31 resignation. He and his wife Sara rushed around to make sure his family, including son Nathan who was in Denver with the Air Force, could be present for the Saturday swearing-in ceremony.
Then he set about praying.
“I have been praying since I found out to make sure that I didn’t cry,” Judge Bratka said. “I guess that didn’t happen.”
