Troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a two-vehicle injury crash that occurred early this morning on U.S. Route 33 east of County Road 10.

The crash resulted in the closing of the northwestbound lanes and one southeastbound lane of U.S. 33 for about three hours.

Ariel E. Ballesteros, 38, of Bellefontaine, was operating a northwestbound motorcycle about 12:38 a.m. when his vehicle struck the rear of a sport utility vehicle operated by April L. Smith, 59, of Belle Center. The SUV then traveled off the left side of the roadway into the median, overturned and came to a rest upright in the southeast lanes of U.S. 33.

After striking the SUV, the motorcycle overturned, throwing the driver from the vehicle, and then traveled off the right side of the road.

Mrs. Smith was transported by Robinaugh squad to Mary Rutan Hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

Her passenger, Jill Woods, 59, also of Belle Center, along with Mr. Ballesteros, each was transported by MedFlight helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus. They each were listed in fair condition this morning.

Causative factors for the crash have not been determined, as the incident remains under investigation. Mr. Ballesteros was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Troopers of the patrol’s crash reconstruction unit are assisting in the investigation. Also assisting at the scene were deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation representatives, Perry Township EMS, Belefontaine Fire and EMS and Tri-Valley Fire and EMS.
