Heartland director discusses long-term care

Kandie Horton, admissions and marketing director at Heartland of Bellefontaine and Indian Lake, addressed Bellefontaine Kiwanians Thursday during a regular meeting.

Heartland is not solely a long-term care facility, the director said, and also provides skilled nursing services.

The typical hospital stay is much shorter than it used to be, and care facilities such as Heartland have a role in helping patients bridge the gap between hospital stays and returning home, Mrs. Horton said, noting that some such services include speech and physical therapies.

The Bellefontaine facility has an occupancy of 99 beds, and the facility at Indian Lake has 51 beds.

In all, 90 percent of Heartland’s admissions last year returned home.

The next regular meeting is July 17. An open board meeting will be conducted, but no program will be offered.
