The City of Bellefontaine and Village of Belle Center’s Shade Tree Commissions encourage area residents to participate in Arbor Day today, as they host separate tree planting events.
Belle Center hosts a tree planting at 5 p.m. Monday at 503 N. Elizabeth St., followed by a tree commission meeting.
City tree commission volunteers and parks and recreation representatives will plant trees May 16 at the new Bellefontaine Elementary School and Bellefontaine Middle School. Students will learn about the importance of planting trees and how to properly plant trees.
Also May 3, the city tree commission will have a booth at the Logan County Farmers’ Market with information about what the public can do to help maintain the urban forest. The booth will host a free drawing each hour for a giveaway of potted tree seedlings.
Shelley Moore, tree commission volunteer, encouraged area residents to celebrate Arbor Day by planting their own trees as well. Some of the many benefits of trees in the environment include adding value to your home, helping to cool your home and neighborhood, breaking cold winds and lowering heating costs, cleaning the air of pollutants and providing food for wildlife.
