UPDATE: Two sustain serious injuries

A motorcyclist injured in a Thursday crash may have been trying to avoid a Logan County Sheriff’s deputy.

The car involved in the crash sustained damage to the driver's side and front windshield.

Bellefontaine Police Chief Brandon Standley said officers are early in their investigation of the 3:50 p.m. crash that seriously injured motorcyclist Hubert P. Wells III, 30, and passenger Crystal R. Bryant, 27, both of Bellefontaine.

Preliminary reports indicate a deputy had spotted the duo in the downtown area riding without eye protection.

The deputy turned his cruiser to stop them but they continued on, riding northbound on the sidewalk along Detroit. Mr. Wells entered the intersection and the motorcycle collided with a westbound car operated by Linda C. Kerns, 59, of West Liberty.

The deputy had yet to turn on his siren and lights and was not in pursuit of the couple.

Mr. Wells was flown by a MedFlight helicopter to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center while Ms. Bryant was flown to the same hospital by Careflight.

Officers report she was in stable condition with orthopedic injuries on the right side. A condition for Mr. Wells was not available. Mrs. Kerns was not injured.

Personnel from the Bellefontaine Fire & EMS Department and Robinaugh EMS assisted at the scene.
