A lot of laughter and a little bit of horseplay and teasing could be heard Thursday morning in an exercise class at the Hilliker YMCA, as participants followed instructor Linda Wilcox’s cues with resistance bands, weights and exercise balls.

While the class members might have had the energy of teenagers, they are members of the Y’s SilverSneakers program for ages 65 and older that recently has seen a boom in members.

SilverSneakers is offered free to individuals in this age group who qualify based on their health insurance plan. In addition to senior exercise classes, the program offers the same benefits as a regular Y membership, including access to the Wellness Center to use weights and equipment and to the walking track, pool and hot tub, all at no charge.

To expand the reach of this senior-geared programming, the Hilliker Y at 300 Sloan Blvd. recently rolled out a new initiative — Silver & Fit — that will provide additional individuals with a free Y membership through their Medicare Part B supplemental insurance.

“A lot of people who didn’t qualify for SilverSneakers before will now qualify for free Y membership through Silver & Fit,” said Candace Watson, Hilliker Y social responsibility coordinator.

“We encourage seniors to stop by our Welcome Center with their insurance cards to find out if they qualify. They don’t need an appointment, just stop by anytime.”
