Teen bicyclist claimed in Shelby County crash

SIDNEY — A 16-year-old boy was killed Tuesday evening after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on Lock 2 Road near Kettlersville Road in Shelby County.

Zachary Kerns of Botkins was traveling westbound on the bicycle about 7:40 p.m. when he was struck by a westbound pickup driven by Richard Kuck, 72, of New Knoxville, according to Dayton Daily News reports. Mr. Kuck told deputies of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office he did not see the bicyclist because of sun in his eyes.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by the Shelby County Coroner.

The driver of the pickup did stop after the crash and did not appear to be impaired, Shelby County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Bender said. There also is no indication that speed was a factor in the accident.

Anna Rescue Squad and the Van Buren Fire Department also responded to the scene.
