BMS team sweeps MathCounts competition

A team of Bellefontaine Middle School students won the 31st annual MathCounts regional competition Saturday at the Apollo Career Center hosted by the Lima Society of Professional Engineers.

The team of Ryoma Kawakami, Nate Kurtz, Alex Taylor and Pryce Neeld will advance to the state competition March 8 in Columbus. Richard Kurtz is their coach.

Ryoma also won the individual round and the countdown round of the competition.

MathCounts is a national competition for grades 5-8 students with an emphasis in solving math problems. A total of nine teams participated in the Lima regional competition.

Ineos of Lima and the Lima Society of Professional Engineers will underwrite expenses for the local competition as well as travel expenses to the state competition. Faculty members from The Ohio State University at Lima and Ohio Northern University assisted in grading the exams.
