Council asked to back housing projects

Backers of two housing projects — one for seniors and one for working families — asked the Bellefontaine City Council for its blessings so they can proceed with applications to use a state tax credit financing program.

Both the Tri-County CAC and Housing Services Alliance would have to submit the projects for approval and the council’s blessing provides critical points for scoring each application.

HSA wants to build a 40-unit, multi-family development off Kristina Drive. It would cost about $6 million and rents would be no more than $765 per month.

“It will fit well in the neighborhood and rival the neighboring condominiums,” HSA’s Executive Director Robert Bender said at the Tuesday evening meeting. “The application process is very competitive and the 15 points we get from the council and mayor, with 10 coming from council, are critical.

“Without either, we won’t move forward.”
